Short answer

Ceramic Tile

₹90₹175 / sq ft installed

Material ₹40₹90 · fitting ₹25₹45 · 1,000 sq ft = ₹89,900₹1,75,100

Vitrified Tile

₹114₹255 / sq ft installed

Material ₹55₹150 · fitting ₹30₹55 · 1,000 sq ft = ₹1,14,450₹2,54,950

Porcelain Tile

₹150₹378 / sq ft installed

Material ₹80₹250 · fitting ₹35₹65 · 1,000 sq ft = ₹1,49,800₹3,78,000

Which tile should you price first?

For most Indian homes the practical shortlist is narrow. Ceramic is the cheapest and is normally kept to bathrooms, kitchens, utility areas and balconies. Vitrified is the default living-area tile because the same 600x600 or 800x800 format covers ground faster and resists staining. Porcelain is worth the premium only where the floor takes real abuse — entrances, commercial areas, outdoor decks.

Tile size changes the labour line

Small formats mean more tiles, more cuts and more grout lines per sq ft, so fitting rates climb even though the tile is cheaper. Very large formats (1200x600 and up) also carry a premium because they need two people, a perfectly level bed and specialist cutting. The cheapest labour per sq ft usually sits in the 600x600 to 800x800 range.

What is often missing from a verbal quote

  • Levelling screed where the existing slab is out of level
  • Skirting — normally charged per running foot, not per sq ft
  • Breaking and disposing of the old floor
  • Epoxy grout upgrade, which can cost several times cement grout

What you get for the money

Ceramic Tile

Glazed clay tiles, the lowest-cost hard flooring commonly laid in Indian homes.

Strengths

  • Lowest material cost of all hard flooring
  • Wide size and print choice
  • Easy to replace a single damaged tile

Trade-offs

  • Chips and cracks under heavy impact
  • Cold and hard underfoot
  • Grout lines need periodic cleaning

Vitrified Tile

Pressed and fired tiles with very low porosity; the default living-room floor in most Indian cities.

Strengths

  • Hard-wearing and stain resistant
  • Large formats mean fewer grout lines
  • Good value per year of service

Trade-offs

  • Slippery when wet
  • Needs a flat, well-prepared base
  • Heavier tiles raise labour cost

Porcelain Tile

Dense, low-absorption tile available in wood and stone finishes, including outdoor-rated grades.

Strengths

  • Very high density and durability
  • Excellent water resistance
  • Convincing stone and wood finishes

Trade-offs

  • Higher material cost
  • Cutting requires specialist blades
  • Installation skill matters more

Ceramic Tile rates by city

Metro labour and logistics push installed cost up; tier-2 cities sit below the national band.

Why flooring prices vary

Material quality and brand
Two vitrified tiles of the same size can differ 3x in price by grade, finish and brand.
City and labour market
Metro labour rates run higher than tier-2 cities; transport adds to material landed cost.
Floor condition
An uneven or damaged base needs levelling screed before any flooring can be laid.
Tile or plank size
Large formats cost more to handle and lay, but use less adhesive and grout per sq ft.
Wastage
Cutting, breakage and pattern matching typically consume 5–10% more material than the floor area.
Removal of existing flooring
Breaking and disposing of an old floor is charged separately, usually per sq ft.
Installation pattern
Diagonal, herringbone and mixed-size layouts increase both cutting waste and labour.
Transportation and lifting
Site access, floor level and lift availability change delivery and shifting charges.

How this estimate is calculated

Every figure on this page comes from the same formula. Rates are stored as configurable low–high bands per flooring type, overridden by city-level bands where we have them, then scaled by the quality level you pick.

effective_area = floor_area x (1 + wastage% / 100)
material_cost  = effective_area x material_rate
labour_cost    = floor_area x labour_rate
adhesive_cost  = floor_area x adhesive_rate
grout_cost     = floor_area x grout_rate
other_cost     = floor_area x other_rate
total_cost     = material + labour + adhesive + grout + other

Areas entered in square metres are converted using 1 sq m = 10.7639 sq ft. The low total uses every low rate and the high total uses every high rate, so the displayed range is deliberately wide — real quotations usually land somewhere in the middle.
